The NMU School of Public Health (SPH) traces its root to the Department of Public Health in 1934 at Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Medical Affairs, one of the institutions initially providing professional training programs in public health and preventive medicine in China. The Teaching and Research Office of Public Health was established in 1940 and enrolled undergraduates in the Public Health program in 1953. It was renamed the School of Public Health in 1995. The discipline of Public Health and Preventive Medicine was graded A+ in the National First-level Discipline Comprehensive Assessment by MOE. Additionally, the Discipline has been granted the first-place winner in the Best Chinese Subjects Ranking assessed by Shanghai Ranking for four consecutive years. The school was selected into the list of national high-level public health colleges
The school has 12 departments, including the Department of Epidemiology, Department of Biostatistics, Department of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Department of Nutrition and Food Hygiene, Department of Maternal Child and Adolescent Health, Department of Toxicology, Department of Hygienic Analysis and Detection, Department of Social Medicine and Health Education, Department of Health Information, Department of Health Management, Department of Microbiology and Infection, and Department of Mental Health; 7 research centers, including the Experimental Teaching Center of Preventive Medicine, the Public Health Teaching Research Center, China National Birth Cohort Research Center, China International Cooperation Center for Environment and Human Health, Center for Global Health, the Hygienic Analysis and Detection Center, and the Public Health Emergency Consultation & Research Center and 1 Research Core Facility.
The school is composed of 226 faculty and staff members, including 42 professors, 46 associate professors. In this high-quality and energetic team, there are 37 doctoral supervisors and 31 master supervisors. The school boasts 2 academician of Chinese Academy of Engineeringand the Academy of Sciences (including workstations), 6 experts who receive the special allowance of the State Council, 2 National Excellent Teacher, 2 Jiangsu Excellent Teacher , 2 scholars enrolled in the state New Century Hundred, Thousand and Ten-Thousand Talents Project, 2 scholars enrolled in New Century Talent-supporting Project of the Ministry of Education, 5 scholars funded by National Natural Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 6 scholars funded by National Natural Science Foundation for Excellent Young Scholars, l scholar enrolled in Young and Middle-aged Leading Talents in Sci-tech Innovation Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 22 other national high-level talents, l scholar awarded with the National Excellent Postdoctoral Fellow, l scholar awarded with National Excellent 100 Doctoral Dissertations,13 awarded with the Distinguished Professors of Jiangsu Province and 35 scholars enrolled as candidates of Jiangsu 333 program (2 of which enrolled in Level-One), 4 scholars honored as experts with outstanding contributions for Jiangsu Province, 10 scholars funded by Jiangsu Province Natural Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars and 2 scholars funded by Jiangsu Province Natural Science Foundation for Excellent Young Scholars.
The school has founded the national experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of preventive medicine and the national first-class professional construction point. SPH innovative training project for high-level applied public health talents were appoved. The SPH was awarded the Second-prize in the National Teaching Achievement, the First-prize of National Outstanding Textbooks. Some courses were selected as the First-batch National First-class Courses, National Excellent Resourse-shairing Courses and National Excellent Online Open Courses. One National Virtual Teaching and Research Office was set up and one program was rated as the Ideological and Political Demonstration Projects of the Ministry of Education. The School takes the lead in editing the first digital textbook for medical students, initiating the PBL teaching in public health, and proposing and undertaking the First National Competition of Comprehensive Public Health Skill for College Students. Over the last few years, the teams in SPH have achieved various awards across different disciplines and levels, in particular, in the “Challenge Cup”, China College Students' Entrepreneurship Competition, and the National Medical Skills Competition for College Students.
The school has been authorized to offer doctoral Degrees of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, the professional master’s degrees for Public Health (MPH) and postdoctoral research stations. The SPH has funded several Key disciplines, including the National Key Discipline of Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Jiangsu Outstanding Disciplines of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, and Jiangsu Key Disciplines with respect to Toxicology and Epidemiology & Health Statistics. For the first time, the discipline of Pharmacology & Toxicology has entered the top 1‰ in ESI global ranking. Further, the School has funded multiple high-level innovative research labs across a variety of fields, including the State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine and Offspring Health, National Innovation Platform for the Integration of Industry and Education in Vaccine, the China International Cooperation Center for Environment and Human Health, the MOE (Ministry of Education) Key Laboratory of Modern Toxicology, Collaborative Innovation Center for Cancer Personalized Medicine Co-sponsored by Ministry of Education and Jiangsu Provincial Government, and the Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Cancer Biomarkers. In particular, its outstanding contributions to the fundamental chronic diseases and reproductive health have been acknowledged and honored the National Natural Science Award (Second-prize) and the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second-prize). In the last five years, the SPH has been granted 268 longitudinal projects with the total funding reaching 252.85 million RMB.
The school has established three undergraduate programs, including Preventive Medicine, Hygienic Analysis & Detection, and Biostatistics. At present, there are over 2200 students, including 964 undergraduates, 1079 full-time graduates, 28 international academic graduate candidates,26 international MPH students and 118 part-time MPH students.
Extensive international cooperation and academic exchanges have been carried out, and bilateral cooperation has been established with universities and research institutes in countries and regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Sweden, and Pakistan. In response to the national Belt and Road Initiative”, relying on China International Cooperation Center for Environment and Human Health and Center for Global Health of Nanjing Medical University, the school of Public Health comprehensively promotes international exchanges and cooperation in higher education and scientific research, and leads the establishment of the Asian Consortium for Arsenic and Health Research(ACAHR) and “the Belt and Road” Health Promotion Consortium (BRHPC).
The school attaches importance to leap-forward development in education and scientific research and simultaneously implements extensive scientific and technological services for our society. Based on these efforts, it has gradually formed our characteristics which are strengthening the integrated development of basic disciplines and coordinated development of education, research and service. Encouragingly, our school was awarded the “National May 1st Labor Medal” and “Jiangsu Advanced Unit of Educational Work”.
